ERC Synergy Grants fund ground-breaking frontier research projects across all fields of science. This highly competitive programme supports interdisciplinary projects bringing together different skills and resources to tackle ambitious research problems.
ERC SyG support teams of 2 to 4 Principal Investigators (PI) to jointly address ambitious research problems that could not be tackled individually. Up to 1 PI can be from a third country: researchers based in Switzerland are therefore eligible to apply with funding by the European Commission.
Synergy projects should enable substantial advances at the frontiers of knowledge. Applications must demonstrate the added value of the synergetic effect and the ground-breaking nature, ambition, and feasibility of their research proposal.
Synergy Grants can be up to a maximum of € 10 million for a period of 6 years. They cover up to 100% of the total eligible direct costs of the research plus a contribution of 25% of the total eligible costs towards indirect costs.
The call opens on the 12th of July and closes on the 8 November 2023. The application is evaluated in a three-step evaluation process, which includes interviews with the entire team as a final evaluation step.
Euresearch organizes an online ERC-Synergy Information Event on the 6th of September, from 11:00 to 13:00. During this event, you will learn more about this scheme with presentations from the ERC-SyG Call Coordinator, from past ERC-SyG Panel members and successful applicants. Registration mandatory.
With a success rate of just below 10%, these grants are highly competitive. Have a look at some examples of ERC Synergy grant projects funded in past calls in the videos produced by the ERC to have an idea of the type of supported project.
