Pursuing your scientific career while raising a child is hardly a piece of cake. That is why the SNSF, the European Commission and other funders have put in place specific instruments to support you in this endeavor. In addition, USI offers financial benefits to all its employees and students.
USI employees and students can request financial support for external child care in case of limited income and if at least one member of the child’s family unit receives premium reduction subsidies from the Canton for their health insurance.
Located in the East Campus (Lugano-Viganello), USI's nursery (USI SUPSInido) gives priority and offers a preferential rate to USI employees and students.
For SNSF-funded postdocs and doctoral students who have to look after children. Flexibility Grants can cover the external child care costs and/or the salary of a support person generally for 2 years. This grant allows (but does not compel) you to reduce your employment rate up to a min. of 60%.
BRIDGE also provides Flexibility Grants to help researchers better balance their childcare responsibilities with their scientific work and academic careers. This applies to both instruments (BRIDGE Proof of Concept and BRIDGE Discovery).
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) support postdoc researchers doing an outgoing stay in Europe (Switzerland excluded). The financing includes a “Family allowance” of EUR 660 for fellows who have family obligations, including children who are being maintained by the researcher.
Contact us to check if your funder offers additional support for parents. For example, grantholders of the Gerda Henkel Foundation receive a family grant on presentation of the child’s/children’s birth certificate(s).
USI in ascolto (USI listening) is a space devoted to listening and providing free of charge individual support to all members of the USI community (students, academic and administrative staff). It offers a limited number of consultations (usually 1-5). Maximum confidentiality is guaranteed.
