Grants for research partnerships with Asia

SERI Leading House Asia Pacific

Seed grants for joint research, policy engagement and PhD mobility between CH and Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and ASEAN (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam).

Research Network Grant

Funding (CHF 50K for 2y) for interdisciplinary projects led by CH-based researchers to develop joint research initiatives or centre-to-centre links with universities or research institutes from 2+ eligible partner countries. Postdocs and above employed at min. 50% can apply. Co-funding required.

 

Deadline: 8 March 2026 at 17:00 CET

Future Leaders Exchange

Funding (CHF 20K) for reciprocal PhD mobility of 2 weeks to 6 months between CH and a recognized university in the partner country. Proposals must be submitted by the PhD supervisor in CH. Co-funding required.

Policy Engagement Grant

Funding (CHF 20K) for CH-based researchers to engage with policy stakeholders in the Asia Pacific on important policy challenges, policy briefs, or training on policy research or leadership for young researchers and practitioners. Postdocs and above with min. 50% FTE can apply. Co-funding required.

Innovation Partneship Grant

Funding (CHF 20K for 2 weeks to 6 months)
• for CH research labs to host PhD scholars of an academic start-up based in the Asia Pacific region,
• to send PhD scholars from CH to a start-up in the Asia Pacific
• for supervisor meetings and research visits (e.g. to validate start-up technology in CH

 

SNSF funding for European partnerships

Ongoing multilateral initiatives

The SNSF is involved in several European partnerships (e.g. CHIST-ERA, QuantERA). These initiatives allow researchers based in at least 3 different participating countries, including CH, to submit joint proposals. Evaluation is done centrally; funding nationally.

Southeast Asia – Europe Joint Funding Scheme

One of these partnerships is the Southeast Asia - Europe Joint Funding Scheme. Consortia must involve at least one partner from South Asia. Call topics:
• New Materials and Green Transition
• Climate-Resilient, Smart Agriculture using AI and IoT.
Max. funding for the Swiss side: CHF 300K.

 

EU funding opportunities with Asia

Horizon Europe

With a total of EUR 93.5B between 2021–2027, Horizon Europe is the EU main research & innovation funding programme. Check out below the calls that allow the involvement of partners in Asia. Swiss institutions can act as coordinators in consortium projects.

HORIZON-CL2-2026-01-DEMOCRACY-02

Supports projects aimed at understanding the forms of local democracy in low-income and low-middle income countries. Proposals are encouraged to foster collaboration with entities in alignment with the EU–Central Asia Strategy, as well as with the African Union and LAC region.

 

Deadline: 16 September 2026

HORIZON-CL2-2026-01-HERITAGE-05

Fosters global partnerships in cultural policies and the Cultural and Creative Industries innovation. Consortia must include min. 3 entities from Africa, Far East, South-East Asia and/or Latin America. They must take part in the project as beneficiaries and are exceptionally eligible for funding.

 

Deadline: 15 September 2026

HORIZON-CL5-2026-09-D2-04

Supports projects with India on recycling of EV batteries. Projects must include at least one work package for coordinated activities with a linked project awarded by the Ministry of Heavy Industry of the Government of India (MHI). Entities based in India can only participate as associated partners.

 

Republic of Korea joins Horizon Europe

The Republic of Korea is the first Asian country to associate with Horizon Europe's Pillar II, enabling full participation in its programmes on equal terms with EU Member States, including direct funding from the EU.
