Get funding for mobility and boost your career

Enhance your academic career with a research stay abroad, allowing you to acquire more in-depth knowledge and increase your scientific independence! There are several types of mobility opportunities, adapted to different career stages.

Deadlines: 17 March and 1 September 2025 at 17:00

USI Doctoral Mobility

Financial support for doctoral students matriculated at USI, not employed in an ongoing SNSF project, for a 6-12 months research stay abroad during their PhD. Financial support of up to CHF 20'000 covers the costs for travel, living costs and fees for conferences and workshops.

Swissunivesities Cotutelle de thèse

Swissuniversities supports co-supervision of PhD theses between a Swiss University and others abroad (Europe/Israel). The funding covers up to CHF 10’000 for travel and living expenses of both the PhD student and the PhD supervisors. Applicants must be enrolled or employed at a Swiss institution.

JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships with Japan

The postdoctoral fellowships programme offered by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) enables researchers based at a Swiss research institution to stay in Japan for 12 to 24 months. The grant covers round-trip, monthly allowance and other expenses.

SNSF Postdoc.Mobility Fellowship

Funding for researchers with a doctorate (or completing it within 9 months after the deadline) to conduct research abroad. It covers research costs (up to CHF 5K per year), a flat-rate for living/travel expenses and conferences costs for a 24-months abroad phase plus a 3-to-12 months return phase.

Mobility Grants in SNSF projects

Mobility Grants in projects are intended for PhD students employed in an ongoing SNSF project who wish to conduct research abroad for a period of 6 to 12 months. The funding can cover travel expenses, living costs, fees for conferences and workshops, up to a maximum of CHF 20'000.

Scholarships from foreign governments

swissuniversities manages government scholarships from over 30 countries allowing students and researchers with Swiss nationality to conduct a study or research stay abroad. Contact relint@usi.ch for support.

Zeno Karl Schindler Stiftung - Doctoral exchange grant

For PhD students in medieval studies or in the digital humanities at the intersection of medieval and computer/data science. Candidates must be hosted by 2 universities based in different countries, one preferably in CH. The grant covers local living expenses and travel costs for 6-12 months.
