The Summer School offers 20 intensive one-week-long advanced-level courses for graduate students, doctoral and early career researchers and more experienced professionals engaged in social research both in and out of academia. This year, five workshops are focused on qualitative designs.
Grounded theory is a methodology used by social scientists to explore, describe, and understand social phenomena from the perspectives of those being studied. This workshop is an introduction to grounded theory methodology with a ‘how-to’ practical focus.
Are you at the beginning of your research journey? In this workshop, you will learn about balancing strengths and weaknesses across exploratory and explanatory designs by combining different designs, using two generic pathways for illustration, an inductive strategy and a deductive strategy.
The aim of this workshop is to explore the practical application of discourse theory to the analysis of textual data. Participants are welcome to bring their own data if they wish to do so and will have a chance to discuss and work on their own data/research project during individual tutorials.
This workshop provides participants with a thorough introduction to Qualitative Comparative Analysis, a case-based research method that is ideally suited to capture causal complexity. Emphasis will be on research design and practical application to enable participants to work on their own studies.
Ethnographic methods are increasingly being used in diverse and creative ways across the social sciences. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the technical, practical and philosophical issues that arise when employing both traditional and innovative approaches.
