I numeri dell'anno accademico 2022-2023

Per il quarto anno consecutivo il numero degli iscritti all'USI registra un aumento, raggiungendo il numero record di 4190 studenti. I fondi per la ricerca competitiva si attestano a 27 milioni di CHF, ottenuti dalle ricercatrici e dai ricercatori attivi sui campus di Lugano, Mendrisio e Bellinzona.

Lunedì 12 dicembre 2022 si è tenuta la cerimonia di premiazione del/la migliore studente/ssa di ciascun programma Master con le borse premio del valore di CHF 4000 messe a disposizione dalla Fondazione per le Facoltà di Lugano dell'USI per l’anno accademico 2022/23.

L'IRB rende omaggio a Marcus Thelen

Lo scorso 30 novembre la comunità IRB ha reso omaggio al Prof. Marcus Thelen, che dopo 22 anni all'Istituto di ricerca in biomedicina è andato a beneficio della pensione. Il Prof. Thelen, biochimico di fama internazionale, è stato uno dei soci fondatori dell'Istituto nel 2000.

AliperTherapeutic vince Boldbrain Startup Challenge

Giunge al termine l'edizione 2022 di Boldbrain Startup Challenge. Il progetto AliperTherapeutics, spin-off dello IOR, si è aggiudicato un assegno di 40'000 franchi e una borsa di studio per l'USI EMBA del valore di 52'000. Revozona ha vinto il premio del pubblico.

Solidarietà per l'Ucraina

La prima raccolta benefica "Humanitarian aid collection for Ukraine" organizzata da Student Association for Ukraine, Agorà e Cappellania universitaria è stata un successo. Sono stati raccolti circa 700CHF, materiale scolastico e centinaia di capi di abbigliamento per bambini, ragazzi e adulti.

Mettere in crisi gli algoritmi per migliorarli

Un nuovo progetto di ricerca condotto dal professor Luca Gambardella dell'Istituto Dalle Molle di studi sull'intelligenza artificiale USI-SUPSI è stato approvato dal Fondo nazionale: lo scopo è ottimizzare gli algoritmi generando in maniera matematicamente robusta istanze difficili da risolvere.

Scholars at Risk, il bilancio del 2022

Il programma Scholars at Risk ha assistito 171 studiosi nel 2022, trovando loro un incarico accademico dove proseguire in sicurezza il proprio lavoro di ricerca e insegnamento. La rete SAR è presente in 43 Paesi e coinvolge 650 istituzioni accademiche tra cui l'Università della Svizzera italiana.

Xu Tiantian ha vinto lo Swiss Architectural Award

Xu Tiantian, fondatrice dello studio DnA Design and Architecture (Cina), vince l'ottava edizione dello Swiss Architectural Award. Il premio promosso dalla Fondazione Teatro dell'architettura con il sostegno dell'USI sarà consegnato il 4 maggio 2023 al Teatro dell'architettura Mendrisio dell'USI.

Mobilità sostenibile all'USI

Per ridurre l'impronta di CO2 relativa alla mobilità, l'USI punta alla diminuzione del 20% entro il 2024 introducendo un regolamento che favorisca spostamenti alternativi ai voli, promuovendo la compensazione delle emissioni e fornendo adeguati mezzi per la didattica a distanza e teleconferenze.

Marco Sieber nuovo astronauta svizzero

Marco Sieber, svizzero, laurea in medicina d'urgenza, paracadutista e pilota, è stato selezionato tra oltre 22'000 candidati, come uno dei prossimi astronauti ESA, il primo dopo C. Nicollier. L'USI, partner del consorzio SXS, si unisce ai festeggiamenti per la scelta del nuovo astronauta.

For the fourth year in a row, the number of students enrolled at USI has increased, reaching a record number of 4190. Funds for competitive research obtained by researchers active on the Lugano, Mendrisio and Bellinzona campuses stand at 27 million CHF.

IRB pays tribute to Marcus Thelen

The IRB community paid tribute on 30 November to Prof. Marcus Thelen, who retired after 22 years at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine. Prof. Thelen, an internationally renowned biochemist, was one of the founding partners of the Institute back in 2000.

The 2022 Boldbrain Startup Challenge draws to a close. The AliperTherapeutics project, an IOR spin-off, won a check for 40,000 CHF and a USI EMBA scholarship worth 52,000. Revozona won the audience award.

Nicolò Pernigoni, a postdoc at IRB, gives a detailed presentation on AliperTherapeutic, the IOR's Boldbrain-winning spin-off. At the heart of the project is research on the influence of intestinal flora on the effectiveness of one of the most widely used therapies to treat prostate cancer.

The Scholars at Risk programme helped 171 scholars in 2022 find academic positions where they could safely continue their research and teaching work. The SAR network is active in 43 countries and involves 650 academic institutions including Università della Svizzera italiana.

Starting in 2023, USI researchers will be able to publish free Open Access articles in hybrid periodicals from the publisher OUP. Full access to periodicals in OUP's Full Collection, for all years since 1996, will also be available to all USI affiliates.

Registration is now open for the International Women's Day Hackathon 2023 Lugano to be held from 10 to 12 February at the USI-SUPSI East Campus. The event, dedicated to the discovery of artificial intelligence, is open to all students (male and female) aged 11 to 19.

Sustainable mobility at USI

To reduce the CO2 footprint related to mobility, USI aims for a 20 per cent decrease by 2024 by introducing regulations that encourage alternative travel to flights, promoting emission offsets, and providing adequate means for distance learning and teleconferencing.

Marco Sieber is the new Swiss astronaut

Marco Sieber has a degree in emergency medicine and is a parachutist and pilot. He was selected from more than 22,000 applicants as one of the next ESA astronauts, the first after C. Nicollier. USI, a partner in the SXS consortium, joins in the celebration of the selection of the new astronaut.
