Nel corso dell'anno accademico 2024-25 sei Professoresse e Professori di ruolo sono stati nominati all'USI, rafforzando ricerca e didattica nelle Facoltà di scienze biomediche, scienze informatiche e scienze economiche.

Nel corso dell'ultimo anno accademico la comunità dell'USI ha continuato a crescere e ad arricchirsi, grazie alla nomina di diversi nuovi membri.

Si è svolto giovedì 11 e venerdì 12 settembre il Benvenuto istituzionale alle matricole dell'USI. L'Ateneo ha accolto oltre 1'300 nuovi studenti nei Campus di Lugano e Mendrisio, con momenti di orientamento, presentazioni e incontri con i direttori di programma.

Lunedì 29 settembre, alle ore 18:00, l’USI vi invita al terzo incontro della rassegna “USI incontra” con Flavio Del Ponte, chirurgo di guerra e uomo di pace. Ha operato in Somalia, Ruanda, Afghanistan e Pakistan, per poi servire all’ONU come consigliere medico del DFAE nelle missioni di pace.

L'Istituto di ricerca in biomedicina ha da poco festeggiato 25 anni di attività. Gabriele Gendotti (Presidente del Consiglio di Fondazione dell'IRB e di Bios+) e Davide Robbiani (Direttore dell'IRB) hanno ripercorso i traguardi raggiunti dall'Istituto, lanciando uno sguardo agli obiettivi futuri.

È nato lo IAST – Istituto per l'architettura sostenibile e la tecnologia dell’USI. Il nuovo istituto promuove ricerca e innovazione integrando riutilizzo, conservazione, ingegneria, tecnologie digitali e sostenibilità in un approccio olistico.

Il rapporto annuale è uno strumento comunicativo che racconta e valorizza le attività, i risultati e i momenti più significativi dell’USI durante l’anno accademico. Oltre a una panoramica su dati e notizie generali, offre una retrospettiva sull’operato dei Prorettorati, delle Facoltà e dei Servizi.

L'USI lancia la nuova edizione de "Il mondo in USI", una serie di eventi curati dal Servizio relazioni internazionali e mobilità per valorizzare la diversità culturale e rafforzare le competenze interculturali della comunità universitaria.

Da oggi e sino all'1 ottobre si terranno le Welcome Weeks: tre settimane di incontri all’USI Truck durante la pausa pranzo (12:00-14:00), per conoscere i Servizi offerti dall'USI e scoprire le opportunità accademiche e sociali riservate alla comunità studentesca.

Maurizio Vannetti, collaboratore de L'ideatorio, ha partecipato alla trasmissione radiofonica della RSI "I Ciclostilabili", guidando il pubblico in un viaggio tra la Luna, Marte, il Sole, vite aliene, l'oroscopo e il cielo di settembre.

YOUniversity torna il 25 settembre, dalle 17:30 alle 21:30, nella Corte del Campus Est USI-SUPSI. Un’occasione per incontrarsi oltre corsi ed esami, scoprire le associazioni studentesche e vivere la musica di Jazzedup Trio e il djset degli studenti. Non mancare!

Sabato è stata inaugurata la nuova esposizione interattiva de L'ideatorio, per esseri umani dai 6 ai 99 anni, dove si potrà scoprire cosa si nasconde dentro a robot e intelligenze artificiali e riflettere su che cosa ci distingue da loro. Aperta il sabato e la domenica dalle 14:00 alle 18:00.

Mercoledì 24 settembre, presso il Campus Ovest di Lugano, avrà luogo la Balzan Lecture 2025, tenuta quest'anno dal Prof. Piero Boitani e intitolata "Roma aeterna". La conferenza si iscrive tra le attività dell'USI volte alla cura e alla promozione della lingua e della cultura italiana in Svizzera.

Dal 21 al 28 agosto si è tenuta in Perù la Summer School "ICTs and the Challenges of 'Overtourism'" con oltre 40 partecipanti tra studiosi, studenti e istituzioni. Guidata anche dall'USI, ha unito ricerca, tecnologie digitali e saperi locali per affrontare le sfide del turismo a Machu Picchu.

Rete Due ha dedicato la prima serie del nuovo ciclo Alphaville a Cesare Pavese, a 75 anni dalla sua scomparsa. La serie, intitolata “Non fate troppi pettegolezzi. A 75 anni dalla morte di Pavese”, è stata curata da Giacomo Jori, professore presso l’Istituto di studi italiani.

Dal 27 al 29 agosto il Campus Est di Lugano ha ospitato la quinta edizione di SIESTA, la International Software Engineering Summer School. Con 33 partecipanti da 9 Paesi, ha unito ricercatori, industria e dottorandi in un programma di tutorial, student talks e networking internazionale.

Dall’8 al 12 settembre 2025 la Facoltà di scienze informatiche dell’USI ha accolto sei giovani studenti e studentesse, provenienti dai cantoni di Argovia, Grigioni, Svitto e Zurigo, per la Settimana di Studio sull’informatica “Coding Camp”, un’iniziativa della Schweizer Jugend forscht.

Il Professor Gambardella, Prorettore per l’innovazione e le relazioni aziendali, illustra come il transfer richieda vicinanza reale sia con i partner, sia con il territorio. Tra le priorità per il futuro, in ottica USI: dialogo con le imprese, sostegno alle startup e nuove cattedre industriali.

Mercoledì 24 settembre alle ore 17:15, presso l'Aula D 1.13 del Campus Est di Lugano, si terrà la presentazione della Founders' Option, il percorso che consente agli studenti di sviluppare la propria startup durante gli studi universitari.

Il Premio per contributi scientifici su tematiche di parità e diversità 2025 è stato assegnato ex aequo ad Andrea Esposito e Daniela Baiardi per le rispettive tesi di Master. Una menzione speciale è stata conferita a Kathryn Angelotti per la sua ricerca sulla salute materna e rientro al lavoro.

Dal 23 settembre la Casa della sostenibilità e L'ideatorio vi invitano a teatro grazie alla rassegna "Ora tocca a noi!". Tre spettacoli dislocati tra Biasca, Bellinzona e Acquarossa, per ridere, riflettere e agire in un mondo che cambia e che richiede nuovi sguardi e modi di esistere.

L'USI è partner del Programma H.I.T. "Leadership Programme for Female Professors from all Swiss Universities". Il Programma H.I.T è un'iniziativa nazionale rivolta alle Professoresse di tutte le università svizzere interessate ad assumere ruoli di leadership a livello istituzionale.

Greta Guarda, Direttrice del Laboratorio di Meccanismi del Sistema Immunitario dell'Istituto di ricerca in biomedicina affiliato all'USI, e Prof.ssa ordinaria presso la Facoltà di scienze biomediche, è stata eletta Presidente della Società Svizzera di Allergologia e Immunologia (SSAI) fino al 2027.

Mattia Bertoli ha ottenuto il Master in International Tourism all'USI nel 2022. Attualmente ricopre il ruolo di Head of Business Development & Product Management presso Lugano Region, a Lugano.

During the academic year 2024-25, six tenured professors have been appointed at USI, strengthening research and teaching in the Faculties of Biomedical Sciences, Informatics and Economics.

Over the past academic year, the USI community has expanded and thrived, thanks to the addition of new members.

The institutional welcome for freshers at USI took place on Thursday, 11 and Friday, 12 September. The University welcomed over 1,300 new students to its Lugano and Mendrisio campuses, with orientation sessions, presentations and meetings with programme directors.

Monday, 29 September at 6 pm, USI invites to the third encounter in the "USI incontra" series featuring Flavio Del Ponte, war surgeon and man of peace. He has worked in Somalia, Rwanda, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and then served at the UN as medical advisor to the FDFA in peacekeeping missions.

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine recently celebrated 25 years of activity. Gabriele Gendotti (President of IRB and Bios+ Foundation Board) and Davide Robbiani (Director of IRB) looked back on the Institute's achievements and looked ahead to its future goals.

The IAST – Institute of Sustainable Architecture and Technology at USI – has been established. The new institute promotes research and innovation by integrating reuse, conservation, engineering, digital technologies and sustainability in a holistic approach.

The annual report serves as a communication tool that outlines and highlights USI's activities, achievements, and important moments from the academic year. Along with an overview of general data and news, it provides a retrospective look at the work of the Vice-Rectors, Faculties, and Services.

USI launches the new edition of "Il mondo in USI", a series of events organised by the International Relations an Study Abroad Service to promote cultural diversity and strengthen the intercultural skills of the university community.

From today until 1 October, Welcome Weeks will be held: three weeks of encounters at the USI Truck during lunch break (12 - 2 pm), to learn about the services offered by USI and discover the academic and social opportunities reserved for the student community.

Maurizio Vannetti, a collaborator with L'ideatorio, took part in the RSI radio programme "I Ciclostilabili", guiding the audience on a journey through the Moon, Mars, the Sun, alien life, horoscopes and the September sky.

YOUniversity is back on Thursday, 25 September, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the East Campus USI-SUPSI courtyard in Lugano: an opportunity to meet outside of classes and exams, get to know student associations, and enjoy live music by Jazzedup Trio and a DJ set by students. Don't miss out!

Saturday saw the inauguration of the new interactive exhibition at L'ideatorio, for humans aged 6 to 99, where visitors can discover what lies inside robots and artificial intelligence and reflect on what distinguishes us from them. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 6pm.

The 2025 Balzan Lecture will be held on Wednesday, 24 September, at the West Campus Lugano. This year's lecture will be given by Prof. Piero Boitani and is titled Roma aeterna. The lecture is part of USI's activities to foster and promote the Italian language and culture in Switzerland.

From 21 to 28 August, Peru hosted the Summer School "ICTs and the Challenges of Overtourism", with over 40 participants including scholars, students and institutions. Led in part by USI, it combined research, technologies and local knowledge to address the challenges of tourism in Machu Picchu.

Rete Due dedicated the first series of the new Alphaville cycle to Cesare Pavese, 75 years after his death. The series "Non fate troppi pettegolezzi. A 75 anni dalla morte di Pavese" was curated by Giacomo Jori, professor at the Institute of Italian Studies.

From 27 to 29 August, the Lugano East Campus hosted the fifth SIESTA, the International Software Engineering Summer School. With 33 participants from nine countries, it brought together researchers, the industry and PhDs in a programme of tutorials, student talks and international networking.

From 8 to 12 September 2025, the USI Faculty of Informatics welcomed six young students from the cantons of Aargau, Grisons, Schwyz and Zurich for the “Coding Camp” Study Week in Informatics, an initiative by Schweizer Jugend forscht.

Luca Maria Gambardella is the Pro-Rector for Innovation and Corporate Relations, Full Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Informatics and a member of IDSIA, the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence USI-SUPSI, which he directed from 1995 to 2020.

On Wednesday, 24 September, at 5:15 pm, in Room D 1.13 of the East Campus Lugano, USI will present the Founders' Option, a programme designed to support students who wish to start their own start-up during their university studies.

The 2025 Award for Scientific Contributions on Topics of Equality and Diversity was awarded jointly to Andrea Esposito and Daniela Baiardi for their respective Master's theses. A special mention was given to Kathryn Angelotti for her research on maternal health and returning to work.

From 23 September, the House of Sustainability and L'ideatorio invite you to the theatre with the "Ora tocca a noi!" season. Three shows in Biasca, Bellinzona and Acquarossa, to laugh, reflect and take action in a changing world that requires new perspectives and ways of living.

USI is a partner of the H.I.T. Programme - "Leadership Programme for Female Professors from all Swiss Universities". The H.I.T. Programme is addressed to female professors from all Swiss universities who are interested in taking on leadership roles at the institutional level.

Greta Guarda, Director of the Laboratory of Immune System Mechanisms at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine affiliated with USI, and Full Professor at the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, has been elected President of the Swiss Society of Allergology and Immunology (SSAI) until 2027.

Mattia Bertoli earned his Master's degree in International Tourism from USI in 2022. He is currently Head of Business Development & Product Management at Lugano Region, in Lugano.
