Undici nuove Professoresse e Professori sono stati nominati all'USI nell'anno accademico 2025-2026. Le immissioni in ruolo riguardano cinque Facoltà e portano nuove competenze nei rispettivi ambiti di ricerca e formazione. L'ateneo registra inoltre una promozione e tre nomine a Professore emerito.

Nel corso dell'ultimo anno la comunità dell'USI si è arricchita di nuovi membri e ha visto collaboratrici e collaboratori assumere nuove responsabilità. In questa panoramica sono riassunte le nuove entrate, le evoluzioni professionali interne e chi ha raggiunto il pensionamento.

Oltre 1'400 nuove matricole hanno partecipato al Benvenuto istituzionale dell'USI nei Campus di Lugano e Mendrisio. Presentazioni, incontri e visite hanno inaugurato il loro percorso universitario. L'accoglienza prosegue ora con le Welcome Weeks e gli eventi dedicati.

La Professoressa Gabriela Eisenring è la nuova Rettrice della Facoltà di Teologia di Lugano, affiliata all'USI. È entrata ufficialmente in carica il 1° settembre, succedendo al Professor René Roux, che ha guidato la FTL per dodici anni.

Dal 1° settembre Mario Padula ha assunto la direzione dell'Istituto di ricerche economiche (IRE) dell'USI. Il nuovo Direttore guida l'Istituto nelle sue attività di ricerca e analisi, rafforzandone il ruolo al servizio dell'economia, delle istituzioni e del territorio.

In vista della prima lezione di "Facciamo conoscenza - Le lezioni inaugurali dell'USI", il Prof. Fabrizio Colella racconta il ruolo delle imprese nel mercato del lavoro, dalla discriminazione al commercio internazionale, fino alle politiche pubbliche e alle sfide per Svizzera e Ticino.

È ora disponibile "Il quarto d'ora accademico", il nuovo podcast dell'USI. In episodi di circa 15 minuti, professoresse, professori, ricercatrici e ricercatori approfondiranno temi di attualità, scienza, cultura e società. La prima puntata è dedicata al nuovo Rettore Claudio Bassetti.

Giovedì 17 settembre l’Accademia di architettura dell’USI ospita Smiljan Radić Clarke, Pritzker Architecture Prize 2026, per la conferenza "Stability". L’incontro, parte del ciclo OPENINGS curato da Enrique Walker, sarà seguito da una conversazione con il curatore.

Un nuovo studio guidato dal Prof. Andrea Alimonti dello IOR, affiliato all’USI, identifica un meccanismo attraverso cui un fungo intestinale può favorire la progressione del tumore alla prostata e la resistenza alla terapia ormonale. I risultati sono pubblicati su Nature Cancer.

Con un successo di poco superiore al 10%, Ambizione è un bando del Fondo nazionale svizzero che permette ai giovani ricercatori di condurre un progetto in maniera indipendente. All’USI, Lorenzo Lorenzetti svilupperà il progetto alla Facoltà di Teologia.

Iscrizioni aperte per giovedì 24 settembre: una serata di musica e giochi con premi in palio per studenti e studentesse USI, SUPSI e Franklin Switzerland. I posti sono limitati, è possibile iscriversi alla pagina dell’evento.

Un gruppo di lettori del Corriere del Ticino ha visitato il CERN nell'ambito dei "Viaggi della conoscenza". Ad accompagnarlo Deborah Barcella, ricercatrice postdoc dell'USI, che ha raccontato la sua ricerca sulla storia del World Wide Web, nato proprio al CERN tra il 1989 e il 1991.

Sono riprese le attività rivolte a scuole e pubblico del servizio di promozione della cultura scientifica dell’USI. Il weekend la sede di Cadro è aperta al pubblico con un’esposizione su robotica e IA, e nuovi spettacoli nel planetario. Sono già quasi un centinaio le classi scolastiche iscritte.

Da settembre 2026 a maggio 2027 si terrà una nuova serie di 10 Brown Bag Lunches sul tema Activating Students – Creating the Conditions for Learning, dalle 12:35 alle 13:25. Gli incontri sono aperti a tutto il personale accademico e amministrativo di USI e SUPSI. Il pranzo sarà offerto.

Dal 7 all'11 settembre la Facoltà di scienze informatiche dell'USI ha ospitato dieci giovani tra i 16 e i 17 anni per il Coding Camp 2026. I partecipanti hanno lavorato in gruppo a tre progetti dedicati a computer vision, reti informatiche e intelligenza artificiale.

Nel corso del mese di agosto si è tenuto il 35° European Meeting of Statisticians, ospitato dall'USI. Con oltre 360 partecipanti da 34 Paesi e 304 presentazioni, l'incontro ha affrontato le nuove frontiere della statistica e del machine learning, con particolare attenzione alle sfide poste dall'IA.

Dal 1° settembre la gestione delle mense e delle caffetterie dei due Campus di Lugano è affidata a 1908 Catering. È ora possibile consultare il menu settimanale sulla pagina dedicata, dove saranno pubblicate regolarmente le diverse proposte gastronomiche e le informazioni utili sul servizio.

Uno spettacolo narrato dal vivo all'interno del planetario, seguito da un aperitivo per chiacchierare di quanto vissuto. Nello spettacolo "A che tante facelle?" viaggeremo dal Big Bang fino ad oggi in compagnia di arte e scienza.

Fino al 25 settembre è possibile partecipare alla survey OECD-UE RelCO, dedicata ai percorsi di carriera nella ricerca e nell’innovazione. Il questionario, della durata di circa 10 minuti, è rivolto a chi svolge attività di ricerca e sviluppo o supporta indirettamente la R&S.

Il 26 e 27 settembre l’EPFL terrà un hackathon di due giorni dedicato a disinformazione e discorsi d’odio. I partecipanti svilupperanno soluzioni a sfide proposte da organizzazioni internazionali, ONG ed enti pubblici. L'evento verrà anticipato da una cerimonia d'apertura, il 22 settembre.

Durante il semestre autunnale sono disponibili diverse opportunità per apprendere la teoria e la pratica della creazione di una startup. Partecipa al corso Business Concept per imparare le basi o al workshop Business Validation per affinare la strategia della tua startup. Le iscrizioni sono aperte.

L’acceleratore ticinese per startup innovative early-stage accompagna 20 team selezionati in un percorso di tre mesi tra coaching, workshop e attività per sviluppare i propri progetti, che culminerà nella Cerimonia di premiazione a dicembre.

Dal 1° gennaio 2027 entrerà in vigore la riforma svizzera dei brevetti, che introduce nuove procedure di esame, ricerca obbligatoria sullo stato della tecnica e novità sui ricorsi. USI Transfer ne segue l'attuazione ed è a disposizione dei ricercatori interessati per eventuali domande.

Il Premio per contributi scientifici su tematiche di parità e diversità 2026 dell'USI è stato assegnato a Irina Mihaela Pandele, diplomata al Master in Architettura presso l'Accademia di architettura dell'USI, per un lavoro dedicato ad accessibilità e inclusività nei musei.

Da giovedì 1 ottobre a martedì 15 dicembre partecipa a Bikecoin: accumula coins andando in USI a piedi o in bici e prova a vincere buoni mensa, buoni sport o il premio finale dal valore complessivo di circa 500 CHF. Insieme, puntiamo a 40'000 km per realizzare stalli bici coperti nelle sedi USI.

È online la nuova pagina dedicata alla protezione dell'integrità personale all'USI, pensata per offrire alla comunità universitaria informazioni chiare e accessibili su come agire in caso di una potenziale violazione.

Sabato 19 settembre un’escursione in Val Bedretto verso il passo del Corno, guidata da Chantal Del Siro (UNIL e SUPSI), permetterà di osservare il ritiro dei ghiacciai del Corno e del Gries e gli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici sul paesaggio alpino. L'iscrizione è obbligatoria.

È aperta fino al 4 ottobre la call Programma H.I.T 2027, dedicata alle professoresse delle università svizzere che desiderano sviluppare competenze di leadership, ampliare la propria rete professionale e prepararsi ad assumere ruoli di responsabilità nel mondo accademico.

Marcello Romanelli ha conseguito il Master in Software Design all'USI nel 2014. Attualmente ricopre il ruolo di Senior Engineering Manager presso GetYourGuide a Zurigo.

Eleven new professors have been appointed at USI for the 2025-26 academic year. The appointments span five Faculties, bringing new expertise to their respective research and education fields. The University also records one promotion and three appointments to Professor Emeritus.

Over the past year, the USI community has welcomed new members and seen staff members take on new responsibilities. This overview summarises new staff members, internal career developments, and those who have reached retirement.

Over 1,400 new first-year students attended USI's institutional welcome across the Lugano and Mendrisio campuses. Presentations, sessions, and tours marked the official start of their university journey. The welcome programme now continues with Welcome Weeks and dedicated events.

Professor Gabriela Eisenring is the new Rector of Facoltà di Teologia di Lugano (FTL), affiliated with USI. She will officially take office on 1 September 2026, succeeding Professor René Roux, who has led the FTL for twelve years.

As from 1 September 2026, Mario Padula takes up the directorship of the Institute for Economic Research (IRE) at USI. The new Director will lead the Institute in its research and analysis activities, strengthening its role in service of the economy, institutions and the region.

Ahead of the first lecture in the "Facciamo conoscenza - USI inaugural lectures" series, Prof. Fabrizio Colella discusses the role of firms in the labour market, ranging from discrimination and international trade to public policy and the challenges facing Switzerland and Ticino.

"Il quarto d'ora accademico", the new USI podcast, is now online. In episodes lasting around 15 minutes, professors and researchers will explore current affairs, science, culture, and society. The first episode features the new Rector Claudio Bassetti.

On Thursday, 17 September, the USI Academy of Architecture welcomes Smiljan Radić Clarke—winner of the 2026 Pritzker Architecture Prize—for the lecture "Stability". The event, which is part of the OPENINGS series curated by Enrique Walker, will be followed by a conversation with the curator.

A new study led by Prof. Andrea Alimonti at IOR, affiliated with USI, identifies a mechanism by which an intestinal fungus can promote prostate cancer progression and resistance to hormone therapy. The results are published in Nature Cancer.

With a success rate of just over 10%, Ambizione is a Swiss National Science Foundation call that enables early-career researchers to run an independent project. At USI, Lorenzo Lorenzetti will develop the project at the Faculty of Theology.

On Thursday, 24 September, YOUniversity returns-the event dedicated to the student communities of USI, SUPSI, and Franklin Switzerland. From 5:30 pm, the USI-SUPSI East Campus will host music, games, activities, and student associations.

A group of Corriere del Ticino readers visited CERN as part of the "Journeys of Knowledge" series. They were accompanied by Deborah Barcella, a postdoctoral researcher at USI, who shared her research on the history of the World Wide Web-which was born at CERN between 1989 and 1991.

Activities for schools and the general public run by the USI science culture dissemination service have resumed. At weekends, the Cadro centre is open to the public with an exhibition on robotics and AI and new planetarium shows. Nearly a hundred school classes have already signed up.

From September 2026 to May 2027, a new series of 10 Brown Bag Lunches on "Activating Students – Creating the Conditions for Learning" will take place from 12:35 to 1:25 pm. The sessions are open to all academic and administrative staff at USI and SUPSI. Lunch will be provided.

The Faculty of Informatics at USI hosted ten young people aged 16 to 17 for Coding Camp 2026 from 7 to 11 September. Participants worked in groups on three projects dedicated to computer vision, computer networks, and artificial intelligence.

Throughout August, USI hosted the 35th European Meeting of Statisticians. Bringing together over 360 participants from 34 countries with 304 presentations, the meeting explored the new frontiers of statistics and machine learning, with a particular focus on the challenges posed by AI.

From 1 September, the management of the mensa and cafeterias across the two Lugano campuses has been entrusted to 1908 Catering. It is possible to view the weekly menu on the dedicated page, where the various culinary offerings and useful service information will be regularly published.

A live narrated show inside the planetarium, followed by an aperitif to chat about the experience. In the show "A che tante facelle?", we will journey from the Big Bang to the present day in the company of art and science.

Until 25 September, you can take part in the OECD–EU RelCO survey, which focuses on career paths in research and innovation. The questionnaire takes around 10 minutes to complete and is aimed at those who carry out research and development or indirectly support R&D.

On 26 and 27 September, EPFL is hosting a two-day hackathon dedicated to misinformation and hate speech. Participants will develop solutions to challenges proposed by international organisations, NGOs, and public bodies. The event will begin with an opening ceremony on 22 September.

During the fall semester, there are different opportunities to learn the theory and practice of building a startup. Join the Business Concept course to learn the fundamentals or the Business Validation workshop to sharpen your startup strategy. Applications are now open.

Ticino’s accelerator for innovative early-stage startups is supporting 20 selected teams through a three-month programme of coaching, workshops and activities to develop their projects, culminating in the Award Ceremony in December.

The Swiss patent reform will enter into force on 1 January 2027, introducing new examination procedures, mandatory prior art searches, and updates to the appeals process. USI Transfer is monitoring its implementation and is available to assist interested researchers with any questions.

The USI Award for Scientific Contributions on Topics of Equality and Diversity 2026 has been awarded to Irina Mihaela Pandele, a graduate of the Master's in Architecture at USI Academy of Architecture, for a dissertation on accessibility and inclusiveness in museums.

From Thursday 1 October to Tuesday, 15 December, join Bikecoin: collect coins by walking or cycling to USI and try to win mensa vouchers, sports vouchers, or the final prize of around CHF 500. Together, we are aiming for 40,000 km to build covered bicycle racks at USI campuses.

The new page dedicated to personal integrity protection at USI is now online, designed to provide the University community with clear and accessible information on how to act in the event of a potential violation.

On Saturday, 19 September, a guided trekking in Val Bedretto towards the Passo del Corno, led by Chantal Del Siro (UNIL and SUPSI), will offer an opportunity to observe the retreat of the Corno and Gries glaciers and the effects of climate change on the alpine landscape. Registration is compulsory.

The call for applications for the H.I.T. Programme 2027 is open until 4 October. It is aimed at female professors at Swiss universities who wish to develop their leadership skills, expand their professional network, and prepare for leadership roles in academia.
